Non-toxic bathroom swaps
Your bathroom is a great place to start replacing toxic products. We use most products in our bathroom every day, and many of their ingredients—good and bad—are easily absorbed by our skin. If you have the resources to replace your old products right away, great! However, I personally feel comfortable (and less wasteful) finishing a product before replacing it. Remember—the natural lifestyle doesn’t happen overnight, and every little change you choose makes a difference.
Please note that I have not reviewed these products to be pregnancy safe, and I personally chose to skip several when I was pregnant—even though they likely would have been completely fine and are better than their mainstream alternatives.
Before you dive in, I recommend reading my 5 rules of natural product swaps to understand how I select products for our family.

The Shower
Everyone 3-in-1 Soap
My husband and I both use this for body wash and love the way it smells! It is EWG-verified, the highest rating a product can get from EWG. While it is scented, I am comfortable with the essential oils used in this coconut and lemon scent. It does contain phenoxyethanol which can be controversial, but since we aren’t ingesting it we personally are comfortable with it.
Acure Brightening Facial Scrub
This is my favorite spa-like face scrub; while it doesn’t score perfectly on EWG, it still scores well and I personally am comfortable with the ingredients, including the EOs (essential oils) used. On days I don’t use this, I just wash my face with water and a gentle exfoliating cloth.
*I choose to skip this one when pregnant because of the specific EOs*
Beautycounter Daily Shampoo
I have tried so many natural shampoos and conditioners, and while I still don’t feel like this option cleans quite as well as the toxic kids, it is the best I’ve found for our hard water. In general, I do love Beautycounter’s products, and the light scent to this shampoo is so refreshing.
The Sink
Thrive Market Gentle Tape Floss
Floss commonly contains PFAS (the same type of harmful chemicals in nonstick pans), so it’s important to choose a natural variety. While I would prefer a type without EOs, the amounts used in this type are so minuscule I am comfortable with it.
Risewell Toothpaste
Fluoride is a known neurotoxin, so our family uses non-nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste. Hydroxyapatite protects and remineralizes teeth as well as or better than fluoride, and it is naturally occurring in the body. We like Risewell because it also omits foaming agents, flavors, and other ickies.
Just Ingredients Deodorant
I have tried a myriad of natural deodorants and found that any that contain coconut oil (which is most of them) left a stinky residue on our clothes that was difficult to wash out. While I do have to apply Just Ingredients more often than others, it doesn’t make our clothes stink!
Sea Kind Night Cream
My husband and I both use and love this cream. It leaves our skin moisturized but not sticky. It is EWG verified as well. When I don’t use this, I really like Mad Hippie’s Antioxidant Facial Oil.
*I choose to skip the cream (but not the oil) when pregnant because of the salicylic acid*
Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum
I use this on my face in the morning as a moisturizer and love the way it makes my skin even and bright. On days I don’t use this, I just skip straight to my tinted moisturizer (see makeup section)
*I choose to skip this one when pregnant because of the specific EOs*
Everyone Unscented Lotion
In the drier months, my husband and I use this on our hands and bodies. It soaks in well but is a little thick. It is EWG verified. Beautycounter’s body lotion was my favorite for a long time, but they just reformulated it. While I generally trust their products, I have not yet researched the ingredient changes so I cannot yet recommend it.
Organic Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is naturally anti-inflammatory and non-comedogenic, with a pH level similar to our skin. I primarily use it to remove my eye makeup (I’m careful to not get it in my eyes), but I’ll also smooth a small amount over my face as a moisturizer. I’m indifferent to the brand but look for a variety that is organic and cold-pressed, as it has the highest amount of antioxidants.
Honest Company Detangling Spray
I have very thick, course hair that can be nearly impossible to comb through. This leave-in conditioning spray makes a huge difference! It is also gentle enough to use on our toddler’s hair when she has extra tangles.
Handmade Heroes Dry Shampoo
Most aerosol dry shampoos are filled with toxic compounds and are nearly impossible to not inhale. While this dry shampoo is a bit messy, it does a great job disguising unwashed hair. Both a darker and a lighter variety are available for different hair colors. While I typically avoid the EOs in its formula, I make an exception for this product since I use it infrequently and it isn’t applied directly to my skin.
Everyone Hand Soap
Our family avoids antibacterial hand soap for a number of reasons, and Everyone has worked great as our everyday hand soap. As with Everyone’s other products, it is EWG-verified. The specific scent I am comfortable with is Meyer lemon + mandarin.
Pacific Shaving Co. Caffeinated Shaving Cream
My husband is very picky about his shaving cream, and this is the only natural one that he has loved. It is very refreshing and he claims it leaves his skin smooth and un-irritated. A little goes a long way, so a tube will last for a while.
DIME Beauty Perfume
Perfume is typically a very toxic product, and even the more natural perfumes have synthetic ingredients. Because of this, I choose to only wear perfume for special occasions. DIME Beauty discloses every ingredient’s EWG rating in their perfumes, and they pass my standards. I also have tried and liked Skylar perfume; while they do disclose all ingredients, they don’t provide the EWG ratings for each one. I prefer DIME’s transparency.
Rael Organic Cotton Tampons
Feminine hygiene products can be filled with unnatural materials and chemicals. I have found Rael’s natural products to work just as well, and I don’t worry about putting nasties into my body. Rael offers a variety of absorbencies to choose from. Cora is another non-toxic brand I recommend.
Rael Organic Cotton Pads
Just as with tampons, pads can also contain many materials and chemicals I don’t want on my body. Rael has a large variety of pad sizes and absorbencies, and I have had good luck with them. I also have tried Cora pads and think they’re another good option.
Medical-Grade Silicone Menstrual Cup
Menstrual cups have a learning curve, but if you get the hang of them, they’re a game-changer. While I love the convenience, I personally chose to stop using them as some say they can cause damage to your pelvic floor. If you are interested, take the quiz at Put a Cup in It for a personalized recommendation on brand and size.
The Makeup
W3LL PEOPLE Power Palette Eyeshadow
W3LL PEOPLE is one of my favorite non-toxic makeup brands, because their natural options perform just as well as their traditional counterparts. I replaced my Urban Decay “Naked” eyeshadow palette with this W3LL PEOPLE one and have been very happy. With four color palettes, there are good options for every individual and occasion.
Crunchi Highliner Eyeliner Pencil
Crunchi is another great non-toxic makeup brand, and their Highliner is one of my favorite natural eyeliners. Beautycounter’s Eye Pencil is another great option!
Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara + Lash Primer
I recently tried this brand of clean mascara, and I love it! It wears well all day and does not transfer even after hours of wear. It can apply a little clumpy, but with a little practice it’s easy to use. I really love the application of W3LL PEOPLE’s Expressionist Pro Mascara, but I have found it transfers after just a couple hours of wear.
Beautycounter Brilliant Brow Gel
My brows are naturally pretty thin but crazy, and Beautycounter’s brow gel smoothes and fills them in well. The gel does become clumpy after a while, but that’s probably a consequence of me not replacing it as often as a should.
W3LL PEOPLE Bio Tint Moisturizer
I use W3LL PEOPLE’s tinted moisturizer as my everyday light-coverage foundation. It minimizes the appearance of pores and gives my face a smooth complexion and color. It also is 30 SPF from its non-nano zinc oxide (the non-nano is important!), and it lasts great all day. I also LOVE Beautycounter’s Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer, perhaps even a little more, but it is more expensive.
W3LL PEOPLE Lip Butter
I don’t wear lip color every day, but when I do, I love that W3LL PEOPLEs lip butter is smooth, doesn’t get clumpy, and lasts well through an event. It’s not too shiny (which I like), and comes in several shades. It was also just reformulated to be 15 SPF, so the Natural shade is a perfect addition to your pool bag.
W3LL PEOPLE Brightening Powder
If I’m in a more humid climate, my face can look a little dewy after using W3LL PEOPLE’s tinted moisturizer. This powder helps set the moisturizer and take away any shine that I don’t want. On casual days, I also will just use this powder to give my skin a smoothed, but still casual, look. A bonus is that the powder is EWG-verified.
W3LL PEOPLE Bronzing Powder
For special occasions when I want to upgrade my casual look, I love this Superpowder Bronzing Powder. It works with many different skin tones and adds subtle, flattering contouring. Like the Brightening Powder, the Bronzing Powder is also EWG-verified.
Honest Beauty Creme Cheek + Lip Color
Also for special occasions, I love the subtle, natural-looking color added by the Honest Company’s Cream blush. It rubs on smoothly and evenly so you don’t have to worry about looking like a clown. It would be great for every-day wear too, I just tend to spend my days outside with a more casual look.
Baby
Pipette Baby Shampoo and Body Wash
I have tried quite a few baby shampoos and soaps with our girls, and unfortunately all of the truly nontoxic ones are pretty drying. Pipette is the best I’ve found, but I plan on continuing to search for a more moisturizing option.
Risewell Kids’ Toothpaste
As with adult toothpaste, we avoid fluoride and use hydroxyapatite toothpaste for our girls. Risewell’s kids’ toothpaste is a great non-nano option, and Miss F loves the way it tastes (cake batter!). Risewell’s formula is safe to eat in any quantity, so no more worrying about a “grain of rice-sized amount.”
Earthwise Eco-Friendly Flossers
As I mentioned previously, many types of floss have PFAS. For the girls, I also want to avoid any natural flosses with EOs, as in my opinion many times the EOs used (tea tree and peppermint) are not safe for kids. A bonus with Earthwise is that they’re made of corn starch, so they’re biodegradable.
Tubby Todd All Over Ointment
Both of our girls battled bad dry skin in our climate for months. We tried many different baby lotions over that time, and this one cleared up their dry skin in days. While it is not found on EWG, I personally am comfortable with the ingredients. If you’d prefer an EWG-verified product, Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby is another option , although it did not work quite as well Tubby Todd.
Boudreaux’s Butt Paste (green tube)
There are lot of natural diaper creams on the market, but for bad diaper rashes they sometimes don’t cut it. A barrier cream like this is very helpful for a few days until a bad rash has begun to heal. Boudreaux’s Natural Aloe (green) variety has pretty clean ingredients compared to other options. When I reached out to their customer service they assured me its zinc oxide is non-nano (yay!), which actually means it’s a pretty non-toxic option.
Honeysticks Bath Colour Drops
While these are definitely not necessary, they make bath time so fun. The drops are very powerful so you can break them into fourths, or even eighths, and one tin will last a while. Honeysticks is a great brand that uses safe ingredients. Note that these are colored with food coloring, which I am comfortable with for bathing, but not for eating (so if your tot likes to drink the bath water, I’d skip these).
